Walk east on U.S. 70 past the old Tennessee Baptist Children's Home site and the ground is moving. A 74-acre mixed-use build is rising where a shuttered campus used to sit, a burger place with a Poplar Avenue following has signed a lease, and a longtime coffee roaster on Bartlett Road is quietly rebuilding its shop around Ethiopian beans it plans to roast in house. If your Saturday plan has defaulted to the same three spots for a decade, the map is redrawing itself.
The one thing changing about a Bartlett weekend
Most Bartlett dining growth over the last several years happened out on North Germantown Parkway, close to Wolfchase. The shift now is that the food and the live music are consolidating back toward the older core, on the U.S. 70 corridor and around Bartlett Boulevard, within a few minutes of the Arboretum, the Performing Arts Center, and W.J. Freeman Park. For a resident, that means fewer left turns across seven lanes of Germantown Parkway to string a Saturday together.

Two long-running names in that same neighborhood, Baby Jack's and Memphis Mojo Cafe, closed in July after more than a decade in business, which is the part that stings if you were a regular. The reinvestment behind them is the counterweight: city leaders have noted that new businesses will help restore tax revenue and keep Bartlett's commercial corridors active.
Union Depot is the anchor to watch
The Union Depot project is the reason the corridor conversation has changed. The new eatery will be located in the upcoming Union Depot mixed-use development at 6896 US-70, on the former site of Tennessee Baptist Children's Home, and construction has already begun at the 74-acre, $162 million Union Depot. Project developer Keith Grant projects that Belly Acres will debut there by early 2026, in a 5,500-square-foot endcap on the ground floor of a live/work building, complete with an outdoor dining area.
The tone the developer is going for is worth quoting. Gill Properties senior vice president Barry Maynard told The Daily Memphian, "We wanted it to be kid-friendly. We didn't want a restaurant that would be bar-heavy with a bunch of alcohol". Read that as a signal about the whole Union Depot food mix, not just Belly Acres. If you have kids on scooters and a stroller in the trunk, the developer is designing for you.
The other three openings, in plain terms
Chipotle at Stage Centre fills an obvious gap for a quick weekday lunch near the middle-school pickup window. Panda Express taking over the old Colton's shell on U.S. 64 is a like-for-like swap in scale, a full-service steakhouse replaced by a 2,690-square-foot quick-service pad. Neither is going to change how a Saturday feels.
Baaloo Coffee Roaster's rework is different. A local roaster leaning into single-origin Ethiopian beans and a café buildout is the kind of thing that gives a neighborhood a Sunday morning without a fifteen-minute drive to East Memphis. Worth keeping an eye on when the doors open.
And Maciel's, whose third store is already open at 3108 North Germantown Parkway, brings a Downtown fixture within a mile of most Wolfchase-side subdivisions.
The Sunday-night play: Arboretum concerts
If you have not been over to Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens on a Sunday evening in the last couple of summers, this is the season to fix that. The Summer Concert Series runs weekly from late June through August. Three dates still on the calendar as of this writing:
- August 2, 5:00–7:00 PM: a set built around a song list full of surprises and gems from the 70's topped by a healthy dose of their own great, original music
- August 9, 5:00–7:00 PM: Texas blues fused with New Orleans funk
- August 16, 5:00–7:00 PM: a Beatles tribute band
Pre-registered ticket holders get folded into a weekly door prize drawing, with prizes donated by LaRocca's Country Market, Trader Joe's, and Rye Ridge Deli. Details and tickets are on the Arboretum's events page.
Two Arboretum events worth setting a reminder for after the concerts wrap:
August 22, 7:30–10:00 AM. A guided woodpecker walk through the 93-acre grounds, followed by a screening of a PBS Nature documentary narrated by Paul Giamatti.
August 30, 11:00 AM–4:00 PM. Honey Fest. Live honey harvest demonstration, tastings, local beekeepers, handcrafted goods, live music.
Neither is the kind of thing you find on a generic "things to do near Memphis" list, and neither costs a weekend.
The Saturday-night play: live music and food trucks
The city's own calendar is the underrated resource here. A few things running now through the fall, pulled from the City of Bartlett events calendar:
- Farmers Market, Saturdays 8:00 AM to noon at the A. Keith McDonald Pavilion, 2699 Bartlett Blvd.
- Bartlett LIVE Outdoor Concert Series at the McDonald Pavilion, running through summer. Twin Soul played W.J. Freeman Park on August 1.
- Food Truck Fridays at Freeman Park.
Then the calendar tips into the fall event that most Bartlett households already know about but out-of-town family members do not: the Bartlett Festival and MBN Patio BBQ Contest, October 2 and 3 at W.J. Freeman Park at 2629 Bartlett Blvd. The Judge Freeman Marr Panther Pride 5K kicks off Saturday morning at 8:00 AM, and the car show, hosted by Mustangs of Memphis, runs alongside the festival. Pre-registration for show vehicles is $25, $30 at the gate.
If you are the household that hosts the out-of-town crew every October, this is the weekend to slot in.
What this means if you already own here
None of this is a reason to buy a house. You already have one. What is worth registering is that the walk-and-drive geometry of a Bartlett weekend is quietly changing. The U.S. 70 corridor between the Arboretum and Union Depot is on its way to being the anchor for casual dining, live music, and the farmers market, all inside about a two-mile stretch. That is a different reality than the North Germantown Parkway-dominant map most of us have been running on since Wolfchase opened.
Two practical suggestions:
- Rework the Saturday loop. Farmers Market at the McDonald Pavilion in the morning, lunch at Maciel's or at whatever opens next at Union Depot, Arboretum concert at 5:00 PM. That is a full day without touching I-40.
- Watch Union Depot's tenant announcements. The Belly Acres lease is the first, not the last. The Westerly is a live/work building, which means residents upstairs and street-level retail below. Whichever coffee shop, bakery, or restaurant lands next will set the tone for that whole side of Bartlett.
